A Nurse’s Perspective: Is At-Home Micro-Infusion Actually Replacing Microneedling?
Lately, my patients at South Bay Med Spa have been asking me the same question: "Can I just do this at home with those gold-plated stamps I see on TikTok?"
It’s a fair question. At-home systems like Qure, Renewa, Servanova, Velora, and Reglow are convenient, and they certainly have a place in a skincare routine. But as someone who performs these treatments routinely, I want to pull back the curtain on the clinical difference between "at-home maintenance" and "in-office correction."
The "Glow" vs. The "Build"
The biggest difference comes down to one thing: Depth.
At-home micro-infusion tools usually use 0.25mm to 0.5mm needles. From a clinical standpoint, these are "stamps" designed to help your serums absorb better. They stay in the epidermis (the very top layer), giving you that immediate "glass skin" glow. It’s perfect for a weekend event, but it doesn’t reach the source of aging.
At South Bay Med Spa, we use FDA-cleared medical devices that reach the dermis (up to 0.5mm to 2.5mm)
Why We Use Biologics (PRP & PDRN)
In the med spa, we have access to medical-grade boosters that you cannot get in a retail kit. Two of my favorites to work with are:
PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma): We use your own growth-factor-rich plasma to dramatically rejuvenate skin, reduce fine lines, target acne scars and large pores all while minimizing down time.
PDRN (Polydeoxyribonucleotide): Initially developed as a regenerative medicine for wound healing and tissue repair, this amazing “skin booster” has been largely popularised by the world of Korean Skin Care. These aren’t just “serums”, they are known for enhancing skin elasticity, promote wound healing, reduce inflammation, help treat acne-related irritation, and strengthen the skin barrier.
Let’s Talk About the "Hidden" Cost
I always tell my patients to look at the math. An at-home kit might look cheaper at $99, but because the needles are shallow, the results are temporary. You have to repeat the process every two weeks.
When you add up the cost of replacement needles and vials over a year, you’re often spending close to what a professional session costs. The difference? One is a recurring expense for a temporary look; the other is a long-term investment in your skin’s health.
My Recommendation:
If you want your skin to look bright for a photo shoot or a wedding next week, a home system might be a good option. But if you are tired of seeing acne scars or you feel like your skin is losing its brightness and/or "bounce," you need to reach the deeper to the dermis.
Most of my patients achieve the best results with a hybrid approach: come see us 2–3 times a year for the "heavy lifting," and use your at-home stamp once a month to maintain high surface hydration.
