PRP for Hair FAQ
-
PRP is a non-surgical, medical treatment that uses a concentrated dose of a patient’s own platelets to stimulate hair growth. The Science: Platelets contain powerful growth factors that act like "fertilizer" for your scalp. When injected, they signal dormant hair follicles to enter the active growth phase and increase blood flow to the hair root.
-
Natural & Safe: Since it uses your own blood, there is zero risk of an allergic reaction or rejection.
Increases Density: It thickens the diameter of existing hair strands, making your hair look significantly fuller.
Reduces Shedding: It prolongs the "Anagen" (growth) phase of the hair cycle, meaning you lose less hair daily.
No Downtime: You can go back to work or your daily routine immediately after the session.

PRP for hair is safe. PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) therapy is one of the safest hair restoration treatments available today for several reasons:
Autologous Treatment: Since the plasma is derived from your own blood, there is zero risk of an allergic reaction, rejection, or transmission of communicable diseases.
Non-Surgical: There are no incisions, no stitches, and no scarring. It is a minimally invasive "in-and-out" procedure performed right here in our office.
Minimal Side Effects: The most common side effects are very mild, such as temporary redness, slight swelling, or a "tight" feeling on the scalp that typically resolves within a few hours.
Proven Technology: PRP has been used safely for decades in sports medicine and orthopedics to heal joints and tendons before becoming the "gold standard" for aesthetic hair restoration.

1. The Preparation
We perform a standard blood draw (similar to a lab test) at our Torrance office. The blood is placed in a specialized centrifuge that spins it at high speeds to separate the nutrient-rich plasma from the rest of the blood.
2. The Treatment
The concentrated "Liquid Gold" plasma is then strategically injected into the areas of the scalp where thinning is most visible. At South Bay Med Spa, we prioritize your comfort; we can use numbing techniques or a cooling device to make the process virtually painless.
3. The Recovery
Your scalp might feel slightly tight or "full" for a few hours, similar to a mild sunburn. There are no stitches and no scarring. You can wash your hair the following morning.

Hair restoration is a journey, not an overnight fix.
Months 1–3: You will notice a significant decrease in hair shedding (less hair in the shower drain!).
Months 3–6: You will start to see and feel increased thickness and early new growth.
The Protocol: For optimal results, we typically recommend a "Starter Series" of 3 to 4 treatments, spaced about 4–6 weeks apart, followed by maintenance sessions every 6–12 months.

For optimal results, South Bay Med Spa recommends an initial series of 5 treatments, typically spaced 4–6 weeks apart.
Because hair growth cycles occur in stages, this 5-session protocol ensures we consistently stimulate dormant follicles for maximum density and coverage. To maintain your results, we suggest a follow-up maintenance session every 6 months and daily use of Nutrafol to support growth from the inside out.

PRP works best for men and women experiencing:
Early-stage thinning or "miniaturization" of hair.
Androgenetic Alopecia (male or female pattern baldness).
Postpartum hair loss.
PRP is most effective when the hair follicles are still active. If an area is completely "shiny" and bald, this is where we would recommend a Hair Transplant Consultation instead.
